Is Coconut Sugar Good for You?

As people become increasingly aware of the harmful effects of sugar. Sugar alternatives are becoming more and more popular. Coconut sugar is quickly becoming the trendy ‘sugar’ of choice.

What is Coconut Sugar?

Coconut sugar is made from  the sap of the cut flowers of the coconut palm. It does not come the actual coconut fruit, the part from which most beneficial coconut products are derived. The manufacturing method is very natural, it simply involves extraction of the sugary fluid, then allowing the water to evaporate.

Coconut Sugar Benefits

Regular sugar doesn’t contain any vital nutrients, so therefore only supplies empty non-beneficial calories.

Whereas coconut sugar does retain some of it’s nutrients including the minerals Iron, Zinc, Calcium, Vitamin C and Potassium, along with some fatty acids, polyphenols and antioxidants. Coconut Sugar also  contains small amounts of fibre.

Plus  coconut sugar is sustainable, in fact The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation named coconut palm sugar the most sustainable sweetener in the world in 2014.

So is Coconut Sugar Healthy?

Coconut sugar contains the same (high) amount of calories as regular white sugar. It also contains high levels of fructose.

Although coconut sugar does have some nourishing properties, you would find a lot more of these nutrients in other whole foods.

At the end of the day, coconut sugar is not a super food.  It is “less bad” then white sugar, but not something that should be consumed in high quantities.  I put it in the same category as honey, maple syrup and agave. Used moderately these sugars will cause no problems and all of the above are my sugars of choice.

It’s always useful to do your own research despite all the hype around a product.

I personally never use white sugar and love maple syrup, honey and agave, into my morning porridge and used in baking healthier sweet treats.  However I ensure I also eat a lot of fruits, veggies, whole grains and proteins!

Coconut sugar can be a bit pricey so I buy a big batch of  the organic one below online and it lasts me for ages!

I hope you found this helpful. Have you tried using coconut sugar?

“Less bad.” Hahaha, I love that. I’m interested to know more about this. I’m allergic to coconut, so I wonder if this will do anything to me. If it comes from the flowers instead of the fruit, maybe?
