How to Stop Comparing and Start Living

Stop Comparing and Start Living

Stop Comparing and Start Living

I posted a quote on my Instagram stories the other day. It read:
“Comparison is the act of violence against the self.
The response I got was incredible. So many people reached out to me, thanking me for the reminder and telling me that they too had been falling into the comparison trap recently. It seems like a lot of you are feeling overwhelmed (I hear you girls!) so I thought I’d sit down today and write a post dedicated to this topic.Stop Comparing and Start Living

“Don’t compare your real life to someone else’s controlled online content”

The topic of comparison in general is really important to talk about, especially in today’s world where social media is bigger then ever. Whilst I love social media and the connections and inspiration it gives me, I never take it too seriously. That is because, social media is a polished and highly curated representation of someones life. Often people only share the very best parts, a highlights reel. Whilst someone’s Instagram feed can fool you into thinking they have “a perfect life” this is often far from the truth. They too have their ups and downs and personal struggles behind the scenes.

“Admire someones beauty without questioning your own”

Next time you see someone and begin to start comparing and questioning yourself, try to use it as a source of inspiration and motivation. What is it you admire about this person? What do they have that you would love to work towards? Let them inspire you and motivate you.

Everyone is different and special in their own way. Instead of comparing, congratulate and be happy for the success of others.  If you see someone’s new Gucci bag on insta instead of feeling down that you don’t have it, feel pleased for that person. You do not know how hard they may have worked to get it.

If someones content does trigger inadequacy, self-doubt and frustration simply unfollow and find others to engage with instead.

“Comparison with my self brings improvement, comparison with others brings discontent”

It’s human nature to compare ourselves to one another, but all it really does take away from you joy and happiness. It takes your eyes off your own goals and starts to focus them on others instead. Life isn’t a competition and everyone is on a different path.

So set your own goals and dreams. Instead of wasting your time and energy over-analyzing others, work towards your own success everyday. You are the only person you can compare yourself with. As soon as you start taking control of your own path and life, you’ll become a lot less focused on the path of others.

What are your thoughts on the comparison trap?  How do you overcome those feelings?

Love this post Hayley! Instagram is such a big trap for comparison – it’s so hard to get sucked into the mindset of ‘Oh she has more followers, oh she has all these designer bags’. I thing the best thing you can do is focus on yourself and how to make yourself happy, and if unfollowing people you envy on Instagram makes you happy, then so be it! 🙂 x
