I’ve been loving experimenting with my Donut pan. I love donuts and it’s so satisfying being able to make healthier homemade donuts.
These red velvet baked donuts are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and refined sugar-free. I frosted mine with whipped coconut, cashew cream or a cream cheese glaze would also work nicely too.
Baking donuts is so much healthier then the typical method, although they taste just as good! They contain no refined sugar or heavy cream.
Made from just 10 easy ingredients they are ready in only 15 minutes but with all the classic red velvet flavor donut form.
Vegan Red Velvet Baked Donut Ingredients
You need the following simple ingredients to make red velvet cake donuts.
- Almond Milk – any plant based milk or cows milk will work
- Apple cider vinegar or lemon juice – white vinegar will work
- Buckwheat flour – can use a gluten free flour blend or all purpose flour if you don’t need this recipe to be vegan
- Coconut sugar – brown sugar would work well but any granulated sugar will work
- coco powder
- beets – we use this instead of red food coloring to get that rich red colour
- coconut oil – can sub for melted butter
- powdered sugar
- coconut milk – must be full fat – can also skip this and make a cream cheese frosting instead
- vanilla extract
How to make Red Velvet Baked Donut
Follow the steps below to make this red velvet donut recipe. Full details can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

Preheat your oven to 350f/ 175c

Lightly grease doughnut pan or donut mold with coconut oil or spray with cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, add non-dairy milk and vinegar. Set aside for 5 minutes.

In a large bowl, add the dry ingredients – flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Stir to combine evenly.

To the bowl with the milk mixture, add the rest of the wet ingredients pureed beets, oil, and vanilla. Whisk thoroughly.

Slowly pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients. Whisk together until just combined; do not overmix.

Divide the batter evenly among the donut pan

Bake on centre oven rack 10 to 12 minutes or until donuts spring back when touched.

While the donuts are baking, prepare the icing. Scoop the solid white coconut milk in the top of the can into a large bowl. With an electric beater, whip coconut milk until smooth and fluffy. Add powdered sugar; beat until fully combined.

Wait until the donuts are completely cooled on a wire rack before adding the icing.Use a large piping bag to ice your cooled donuts

Decorate with sprinkles or crumbled donut

Healthy Red Velvet Baked Donut
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsweetened non-dairy milk I used almond
- 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
- 1 ½ cup buckwheat flour
- 3/4 cup coconut sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup beets cooked and pureed
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the icing:
- 1 14- ounce can full-fat coconut milk refrigerated overnight
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350f/ 175c
- Lightly grease doughnut pan with coconut oil.

- In a large bowl, add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Stir to combine evenly.
- To the bowl with the milk mixture, add pureed beets, oil, and vanilla. Whisk thoroughly.
- Slowly pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients. Whisk together until just combined; do not overmix.
- Divide the batter evenly among the donut pan
- Transfer mixture to the donut pan filling about half full.
- Bake on centre oven rack 10 to 12 minutes or until donuts spring back when touched.
- Remove from oven, repeat with remaining batter
- While the donuts are baking, prepare the icing. Scoop the solid white coconut milk in the top of the can into a large bowl. With an electric beater, whip coconut milk until smooth and fluffy. Add powdered sugar; beat until fully combined.
- Wait until the donuts are completely cooled before adding the icing.
- Decorate with sprinkles or crumbled donut.
