Every year fashion trends come and go. It happens so fast that sometimes by the time you catch on to something, it’s already out of style. This year is no different, and as we head into the warmer months of 2023, you can expect some trends to emerge or fully come into their own. The great thing about this year’s trends is that there’s a mix of modern and nostalgia. So you might be able to dust off something from your closet that you’ve had in there for 20 years. However, to keep up, you’ll also have to add some new items.

Sheer Looks
There was a time when many of us were cooped up in our homes, either working remotely or watching Tiger King. Since then, there has been a new movement to be as open as ever. Florence Pugh, Rihanna, and even Cher have hit the red carpets with sheer and even see-through outfits. The current trend involving sheer looks is to pair a see-through dress with a boldly colored maxi dress underneath or a more playful undergarment. It’s run, and it’s risque, but it reflects the need to feel free in this post-pandemic world.
Lug-Sole Loafers
These are already in style; you can expect them to continue into spring and summer. The chunky soles are comfortable, give you height, and give a sporty look that goes excellently with a tennis miniskirt. In addition, they are highly versatile, as you can wear them with your comfortable clothes, like sweat pants or tights, and also with a dressed-up preppy style that has come back in recent years.
Pink
Bold colors have been in lately but look for pink as a dominant force this year. Just like with sheer clothing, people want to be loud and proud after the pandemic, and pink is a great way to do that. With “Barbie” coming out this summer, you can only expect it to intensify. If you want to take part in this trend, go all-out with head-to-toe pink. Try a skirt and blouse, and layer that with a pink jacket. The styles of the 90s go well with pink, so do it like you did in high school, only more.
Ballet Flats
Let’s face it, most of us haven’t worn heels very often in the past few years. That’s why ballet flats have been so popular and will be for the time being. People have gotten used to not wearing heels, and many don’t want to return. Feel free to wear them to work, to weddings, and when you hit the grocery store. They provide a comfortable yet classy alternative and can be dressed up or down depending on the circumstances. They work very well with trousers or jeans, or a maxi skirt.
Denim
We all knew it would happen, but now it’s official: denim is back and in a big way. Since blue has been a minor trend recently, denim has slowly returned to runways and the streets. However, it’s not just for jeans anymore. You can find strapless dresses, shoes, and even underwear that have been adorned with the material. For a quality casual look, try a denim skirt paired with a white blouse and covered with a jean jacket. If you’re feeling a bit crazy, you can wear thigh-high denim boots to complete the look.
Cargo Pants
Cargo pants were a hit with frat boys and 40’s dads in the 90s and early 2000s, but they are coming back more modernly. Back then, cargo pants looked like canvas and came in beige or dark beige. Now, there is a lot to work with regarding this trend. Now you can get tailored silhouettes, original pocket placements, and different types of materials like silk. So for a night out at the club or to a wedding, choose flowy silk pants that are high-waisted for formal events and low-waisted when you want to cut loose.
Sparkles
Here is another “look-at-me” trend that comes straight from the ’90s. Sparkles are in and will continue to be well into 2024, most likely. Jewelry isn’t the only source of bling, though. You can get clothing with embellished and bedazzled buttons or shoes that feather bejeweled heels. Look for any place to show off some glitz, and you’ll be on the right track. This trend works best when you can use the sparkle to provide an accent to your outfit. For instance, a white top and overcoat can be paired with sparkly pants or a sparkly accessory to draw the eye and add an element of pizzazz.
Thigh High Splits
It’s always in style to show a little leg, and we will be getting a lot of it this year. Dramatic thigh-high splits are all the rage, and it does not seem to slow down. You can layer your skirt for a less revealing look or amp up the sultriness with a monochrome dress that allows your gams to poke out every time you take a step. This is one 2023 look that will always be in style in some way, but you can take special advantage this year. Try a split midi-skirt if you want to go sexy but are worried that a mini might be too much.
2023 Trends
2023 is no different than any other year. There will be trends that pop up and flame out, and others will stick around a while longer. The interesting thing about this year is how many styles have been imported from the 90s and 00s as designers who grew up in that era are starting to come into their own. However, those looks have been updated and evolved in great new ways that reflect modern fashion. If you want to be on top of the trends this year, then this list is a good place to start.
