A Week In Cuba- Iberostar Playa Pilar Review

I just spent a dreamy two weeks in Cuba and it was incredible. Every year we like to do one beachy holiday, where the focus is on the beach, pool, sea and relaxing! This year we chose Cuba for it’s pristine beaches, culture, and warm weather.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at the all-inclusive 5-star hotel iberostar playa pilar, we chose this hotel as we have stayed at several other Iberostar hotels in the past and have always had an amazing time. It was our first time visiting Cuba and we couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay. A natural Eden that is so peaceful, with turquoise water and coconut trees.

We couldn’t really fault it. Think perfectly blue hues, a fine white-sand beach, the most beautiful sunsets. It’s a truly stunning coastline and a rightful star of the Caribbean!

Located near the famous shores of Playa Pilar. This is a family-friendly resort that offers a supervised kids club and plenty of pools.

All rooms from standard to junior suites come with balconies or terraces which are perfect for watching the stunning sunsets.

With lots of complimentary daily activities such as Tai Chi classes or dance lessons teamed with non-motorized water sports like snorkelling and windsurfing on the calm waters you definitely won’t get bored.

A Week In Cuba- Iberostar Playa Pilar Review

Read my review on Iberostar Playa Paraiso.

From the time we got there to the time we left, we were blown away by how beautiful everything was, how great the food was, and how accommodating and nice all of the staff were.

The food was amazing! There was so much choice, even the fussiest of eaters would be able to find something! Every meal there was something different to choose from.

There’s one main restaurant which is buffet style, where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner. There were also four à la carte restaurants from a Japanese restaurant, for a week stay you can choose up to three to dine in. My favourite was the Gourmet!

There is also a lobby bar where you can get drinks all day long.

The pool area was clean and well maintained with a swim-up bar in the main swimming pool, and lots of comfortable sun loungers. There’s a children’s pool available for little ones.

There was also a mini bar and fridge in our room that was restocked daily, this was also included in the all inclusive package. There was a snack bar that was open 24 hours as well.

The decor of the Iberostar selection playa pilar hotel was contemporary design and it felt like a modern hotel.

My favourite thing about this hotel was the turquoise sea. It’s not a beach in a traditional sense but it was amazing. They do have sandy beach area with umbrellas and loungers, but only a small portion of that beach goes into the water. Most of the ocean shore is covered with coral and you can walk directly across a boardwalk and look down at all the sea life. The pier is the easiest way to get into the sea.

The sea is shallow, perfectly clear and beautiful. With a soft sandy bottom and the water was always warm. As it’s a protected area, the snorkelling is excellent. We saw so much wildlife from a variety of tropical fish, even needle fish, star fish and hermit crabs. The water here is so clear that you don’t even need snorkelling equipment. If you keep still, a school of colourful fish come to investigate you, pure bliss.

The water is so calm you can wander out for 50 meters before it gets deep.

What We Did

If you find yourself in Cayo Guillermo, you must visit the stunning, 500 meter long Playa Pilar beach. It’s a true white sand and crystal clear water paradise. It’s only a 15 minute walk from Iberostar Playa Pilar. You can also walk to the beach through the water during low tide, which is what we chose to do, it takes around 30 minutes.

It’s the most beautiful beach I’ve seen.

We spent most of our time snorkelling and exploring. The are also non motor sports available for free at the hotel, from a pedalo boat, catamaran and kayak.

Iberostar Playa Pilar Wifi

Honestly the WIFI was not great. There is no free wi-fi and you have to buy wifi cards at the hotel which cost 2 pesos for 1 hours worth of wifi.

However the signal is not that great and we found it only we worked well in the hotel lobby and a little bit around the pool.

Iberostar Playa Pilar Map

Below you can find a Iberostar Playa Pilar Map. As you can see everything is very spread out and doesn’t feel too crowed in any of the areas.

How Far is Playa Pilar from the Airport?

Playa pilar is around 46 km from Jardines Del Rey airport. It will take around 40 minutes transfer time.

Where is Playa Pilar?

Iberostar Playa Pilar is located in Cayo Guillermo, one of the keys of the Cuban province, Ciego de Avila, and it has one of the most beautiful beaches in Cuba and the Caribbean.

Iberostar Playa Pilar All Inclusive

The all inclusive food at Iberostar is great. The selection at the buffets isn’t the best in terms of variety. However everything is delicious and well cooked.

Drinks are available all day from the reception lobby, there is also a pool bar, cigar lounge, beach bar and an ice cream stand.

There are four a la carte restaurants which were incredible, especially the Japanese.

We had the most magical time, from the amazing sunrises, to the colourful sunsets, to the clear blue water, it was almost like walking in a postcard. This five-star resort has the most beautiful location, with lots of amenities, amazing entertainment staff and lots of dining rooms. I definitely want to go back to Cuba and see more.
