Chocolate Scones with strawberries for a healthy and indulgent snack or dessert
Chocolate and strawberry is such a classic combination! In this recipe I combined chocolate and strawberries to create gluten free and vegan scones!
Chocolate Scones with strawberries Ingredients
- flex egg – chia egg or normal egg will work too
- milk – any milk will work, I used almond
- buckwheat flour – can use all purpose flour
- baking powder
- unsweetened cocoa powder – any regular cocoa powder will work
- coconut sugar – can use brown sugar or any other granulated sugar
- coconut oil – must be cold not melted or room temperature, can also use cold butter
- strawberries
Variations
Dark Chocolate chips – add a handful for chocolate chip scones. You can add a chocolate drizzle on the tops of the scones too to make triple chocolate scones. One for the chocolate lovers!
Different Fruit – cherries or raspberries would work well
Vanilla – add some vanilla extract
How to Make Chocolate Scones Recipe
Here’s how to make chocolate flavor homemade scones.
- Preheat your oven to 400f/200c degrees and line a baking tray with parchment paper
- Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix well using a wooden spoon or rubber spatula
- Add the chilled coconut oil and cut into the dry ingredients. I used a fork to do this, can also use a pastry cutter
- Stir in the wet ingredients – milk and egg and gently mix (not too rough)
- Gently the strawberries into the scone dough
- Knead the dough a few times then add to a lightly floured surface and roll out into 1 inch thick circle
- Slice into 8 scones and transfer to baking tray
- Bake in oven for 20-25 minutes
- Leave to cool completely before enjoying
- Optional I added a drizzle of Sweet Freedom Choc Shot on top for that extra chocolatey taste!
There’s nothing better then pulling these warm scones from the oven. They smell incredible and have the best flaky texture with rich flavor.

Ingredients
- 1 flax egg
- 3/4 cup almond milk
- 2 cups all buckwheat flour
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 2 tbsp cocoa
- 1/4 cup coconut sugar plus more for topping
- 6 tbsp cold chilled coconut oil
- 1/2 cup chopped strawberries
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400f/200c degrees and line a baking tray with parchment paper
- Combine dry ingredients and mix well
- Add the chilled coconut oil and cut into the dry ingredients. I used a fork to do this, you can aslo use a pastry blender
- Stir in the nut milk and flax egg and gently mix (not too rough)
- Gently fold in the strawberries
- Knead the dough a few times then add to a floured surface and roll out into 1 inch thick circle
- Slice into 8 scones using a sharp knife and transfer to prepared baking sheet
- Bake in oven for 20-25 minutes
- Leave to cool for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack
- Optional add a drizzle of melted dark chocolate on top of the scones for that extra chocolatey taste!
- Store your scones in an airtight container
