Healthy Apple and Blackberry Crumble with Oats Substitutions

This easy dessert can be easily customised depending on what you have at home.

  • Maple syrup – Any liquid sweetener such as agave or honey will work
  • Coconut oil – Can be subbed for dairy free butter or normal butter
  • Apples – I used red apples however granny smith apples or pink apples will also work
  • Oats– Can use almond flour or plain flour, however the texture will be different and you may need to add more liquid if the crumble topping looks too dry
  • Blackberries – I used fresh blackberries, frozen will also work. You can take at the blackberries and use extra apple for an easy apple crumble.

How to Make Apple and Blackberry Crumble

Full recipe details can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  1. Preheat oven to 180C.
  2. We make the crumble layer first. Place 1 cup of the oats in a food processor and blend until a flour has formed, then add this flour to a large bowl with rest of the oats.
  3. Then we add the coconut oil, maple syrup, lemon juice and cinnamon to a medium saucepan  on a medium heat and heat until the coconut oil has melted and everything has mixed nicely.
  4. Pour over the oat mixture and stir well until all of the dry ingredients are coated with the wet ingredients.
  5. Next make the fruit filling. Peel, core and chop the apples. Place these in a saucepan along with the juicy blackberries, maple syrup, cinnamon and enough boiling water to just cover the bottom of the pan. Put the lid on the pan and allow it to simmer for around ten minutes, until the fruit is nice and soft.
  6. Once the fruit is ready transfer it into the bottom of your baking dish and layer the oat topping above it. Then bake for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
  7. Leftover crumble need to be covered with plastic wrap or an airtight container. I would store in the fridge instead of at room temperature for freshness.
