If you are, then why not hike all the way up? Going halfway up is still something that’s possible for people not experienced in hiking, though. Going halfway up the mountain will still give people the opportunity to see ancient temples, incredible views, and beautiful churches.

Mount Athos

The predominant religion in Greece is Eastern Orthodoxy, a variant of Catholicism. Throughout Greece, you will find Orthodox churches. The Orthodox tradition is very mystical. A very important place in terms of mysticism in the Orthodox Church is Mount Athos, a mountain inhabited almost exclusively by monks. There are lots of different churches and monasteries up and down the mountain. Women are not allowed on, however. There are places you can stay if you want to hike to the top. Consider giving money as a donation to the monks if you will be hiking up.


Epidaurus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the best places to visit if Greek history interests you. It is best known for the ancient theatre located there, which was built over 2,300 years ago. The theatre has seating for up to 14,000 people. It is still used to this very day for Greek plays, during the Epidaurus Festival, which you can get tickets for in July and August. There is also a temple there, dedicated to the god Asclepios. You can also find a museum there, which you can visit if you want to learn about the area’s history.

Greek Islands

It’s hard to pinpoint a specific island since Greece has hundreds of islands surrounding it. The Greek islands are definitely worth visiting. Try to visit as many as you can on your trip there. You can take a boat island hopping, or you can visit islands and stay on them. Each island has its own unique and distinct culture. Some even have their own unique cuisines. One of the best things about visiting the islands that surround Greece is that, for the most part, they are very affordable to travel to (and stay on).
